The last two seasons have been a real ordeal for Roger Federer on a sporting level. The former world number 1 had to deal with a serious injury to his right knee, which kept him away from the circuit for many months forcing him to undergo three surgeries. Suffice it to say that the Swiss star played just 13 official matches last year, collecting nine wins and four losses. The 40-year-old from Basel reached the quarter-finals at Wimbledon, where he remedied a loud beating at the hands of Hubert Hurkacz on Center Court. A few weeks later, the 20-time Grand Slam champion announced that he had suffered a knee relapse and had to undergo surgery for the third time in 18 months. The King hopes to return in late summer or early autumn, perhaps for the Laver Cup. In the meantime, news has been made that Roger will participate in the 2022 edition of the ATP in Basel. In a recent interview with Bild, Tommy Haas expressed his opinion on Federer's return.
Haas on King Roger's return
"Roger Federer seriously believes in his comeback and fights hard for it. He wants to know it again and not just deliver a PR appearance. I would never write Roger off. Maybe he won't necessarily win another Grand Slam. But he can always get to the quarter-finals or semi-finals – if he's healthy," Haas declared. Roger Federer and Tommy Haas have been friends for a long time, but they have also competed against each other on a number of occasions. The duo have played each other 17 times, with Federer leading the head-to-head 13-4. There is a lot of bustle around Russian and Belarusian players getting banned from Wimbledon this year. A lot of players have expressed their views either in favor of it or against it. The ATP and WTA are allowing the players to play under neutral flags, but Wimbledon has banned the players from competing this year. The Frenchwoman continued, “We keep the line of what all the European governments–and other governments–decided in March, i.e. national teams of Russia and Belarus banned, but not the athletes as individuals, as long as they play under strict neutrality. We will be very meticulous on that.” The stance of the director is very clear. She has clarified that the players should stay neutral and should not make any statement in anyone’s favor. 13-time champion Rafael Nadal‘s injury in Rome has developed an apprehension around his performance at the French Open.
