World no. 7 Alexander Zverev is through to his 20th ATP final at home in Cologne, beating Alejandro Davidovich Fokina 7-5, 7-6 in an hour and 56 minutes. Competing for the first time since the Roland Garros fourth-round loss to Jannik Sinner, Alexander will seek the first title since Geneva in May 2019, prevailing over the Spaniard on a slow hard court and waiting for the winner of the second semi-final. At the US Open, the German stormed over the Spaniard, losing five games and sealing the deal in an hour and 34 minutes. Today, he had to work much harder to cross the finish line first, winning five points more than Davidovich Fokina and scoring two breaks from seven opportunities. The German got broken once in the second set, waiting until the tie break to break the rival's resistance and seal the deal in the final. There were no chances for the returners in the opening 11 games of the encounters, with both players serving well for almost 50 minutes.

Alexander held at 15 in the first game, followed by a service winner from Davidovich Fokina who leveled the score at 1-1 and got his name on the scoreboard. At 15-30 in the fifth game, Zverev placed a volley winner to avoid troubles, closing the game with two powerful serves to move 3-2 in front. From 30-0 down, the home star fired four winners in game seven to remain on the positive side of the scoreboard, failing to create anything on the return so far. Both players brought home games nine and ten with unreturned serves, entering the set's final stage with no room for errors. Alexander moved 6-5 in front with a smash winner, stealing the set when Alejandro sprayed a forehand mistake in game 12.

Alexander Zverev will play for the first ATP title since Geneva in spring 2019.

Zverev saved a break point in the first game of the second set , creating a 3-1 gap with a break in game four. The German landed an ace to confirm the advantage before he spoiled all that at 4-2 when his forehand finished wide, suffering a break and bringing Alejandro back into contention. The Spaniard held at 15 to level the score at 4-4 and delivered another comfortable hold before serving to stay in the match at 5-6. Like in the opener, he faced a break point, saving it to prolong the action and bring the tie break. At the end of the fourth point, Davidovich Fokina injured his right hand while hitting the banner, requiring the medical timeout and spraying a forehand error at 3-6 to push Zverev into the final.
